The University was founded in 1990 through an Act of the Western Australian Parliament and a Canonical statute from the Archdiocese of Perth, enacted on 2 July, 1991. In the 12 years since classes commenced, Notre Dame has rapidly gained a reputation for innovation and excellence in higher education. Student numbers have grown from a handful in 1992 to over 3000 in 2003.
